2010 - A Year in Review

Eagle Watch Men’s Golf Association

2010 is now behind us and overall, it proved to an excellent year!  The MGA Board of Directors had a great time planning, executing and participating in the wide variety of MGA tournaments and certainly welcome another year with top-notch greens and superb competition.  We had over 125 members that supported the MGA and it is our overall mission to make sure we provide value to them in everything we do.  To summarize the year, this is what transpired:

TOURNAMENTS

Last January the Bloody Mary Open was a big success (too bad this years’ was cancelled due to weather!).  Leading the pack for top Gross honors were yours truly, Gary Janos, Alex Lucco, John Heath & Ed Wagner with a 61 and Net honors went to Frank Peters, Tom Vipond, Dave Mossige and Don Viscio with a 54.

In February we conducted the 4-Man Combined Quota Dogfight.  A total of 51 players participated in this fun event where we took the best point-pulls per hole and matched them against individual quotas.  After battling the weather we ended up with a 3-way tie for first place with a +1 – winners splitting the prize were: (1) Beyer, Sims, Beasley, Cunningham (2) Cullen, Desantis, Burgess, Richter (3) Squires, Dickson, Blasko, Fishman.

What’s a new year without green beer and the St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Shuffle?  This is a flighted best-ball event by tee box (White, Blue, Gold); winners from the Gold Tees were Gary Janos & Alex Lucco, Blue Tees champs were Bruce Worthington & Dave Mossige and a tie for 1^st Place honors from the White Tees were Reed Polomsky & Lew Fishman and John Leonard & Bo Johnson.  Great times had by all…

April in Georgia not only brings us The Masters golf tournament in Augusta but locally it brings us The MGA Masters “Crème of the Crop” Tournament, a Premier MGA event.  This is one of our popular 2-day events held annually that is a unique best-ball of 2 days format.  Winner of the Green Jacket from the Gold Tees was Alex Lucco (gross), from the Blue Tees were Mike Smithson (gross) & Frank Peters (net), and from the White Tees were Bo Johnson (gross) & Erik Rosengren (net).  All of these winners received free membership to the MGA for 2011!  Don’t miss it this coming April!

On May 1^st the MGA in conjunction with Eagle Watch staff put on the first annual EWMGA Spring Kick-Off Fundraiser (Pig Roast).  Almost 80 players participated in this event and had an excellent time!

As the greens were being rebuilt during the summer, the MGA was at work planning the Welcome Back to The ‘New’ Eagle Watch Tournament to be held in August.  It was extremely gratifying to finally putt on greens that were better than superb and at the end, scores reflected it.  Sixty nine players participated in this flighted two-man Best Ball tournament with Bonney/Heath winning the 1^st Flight, a tie for First Place in the 2^nd Flight between Perkett/Hosmer and Gould/Koerner and winning the 3^rd Flight was Desantis/Whitten.  It was great to be on our home course again.

The tournament that all MGA members wait for every year and one of our premier events, the MGA Member/Guest Tournament was held in October.  This exclusive tournament consisted of 5 flights with between 6 to 8 teams per flights based on combined indexes.  Four matches were played over 2 days with teams fighting for bragging rights for Flight Champions and Overall Champions.  Flight winners were Vipond/Vipond, Macurak/Macurak, Richter/Kolstad, Tripp/Tucker and Alpern/Roberts.  Overall after a grueling 2-hole shootout, Mike Putnam and Steve Davis came out on top and won this prestigious event on the 11^th hole!  This is a GREAT event, don’t miss it next year!

Finally, ingenuity took hold and the MGA, with help from Eagle Watch, developed and slipped in another tournament in December with a very creative and entertaining format.  The Superintendent’s Revenge consisted of a 4-man scramble left up to the mercy of the EW Superintendent!  Six holes had cups of ‘normal size’, six were ‘over-sized’ and six were ‘under-sized’ – not to mention all of these holes were cut in VERY difficult places on the greens!  First Place honors went to Janos/Smith, B./Daniel/VanLeuven with a score of 61.  This event was so popular we are including into next year’s slate of MGA tournaments!

All of this does not even include the MGA’s weekly Thursday Night Men’s League, held every Thursday night from March till September.  This is a great way to unwind after work, get in 9 holes and drink beer with your buddies.  Grab a partner & don’t miss out!

BENTWATER CLUB MEMBERS CAN NOW JOIN THE EWMGA!

On August 10^th the Board along with the majority vote of the EWMGA membership approved an amendment to the MGA Constitution allowing members of Bentwater Golf Club to join and participate in EWMGA events (49 Members IN FAVOR, 10 Members NOT IN FAVOR).  This action is the result of requests from Bentwater Golf Club members (their club does not include a Men’s Golf Association); the MGA Board considered this request beneficial to the overall mission of the EWMGA. 

NEW MEMBER/GUEST REQUIREMENT PASSED

A new requirement was unanimously passed by the Board requiring that a member must participate in at least two MGA (2) tournaments during the year in order to eligible for participation in our Member/Guest event. This year’s tournament is scheduled for October 1-2.

2011 MGA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

Voting concluded for the 2011 Eagle Watch Men’s Golf Association Board of Directors.  We are all very excited to spring into a new year and all very excited to work with a dedicated group of guys that want to make this organization the best around.  With that in mind, I want to personally introduce you to the eleven 2011 MGA Board members for the upcoming season:
